May Happenings for the Puppy Mills CampaignMay 12, 2009 Big things are happening with regard to Quebec’s puppy mill issue this month.
March for Dogs HSI Canada representatives participated in a grassroots march on May 3rd, 2009, organized by concerned citizen Micheline Robitaille. HSI Canada was pleased to take part in such a successful event. The peaceful march started on the steps of Quebec City’s parliament and wove its way through the city’s tourism district in support of ongoing efforts to change Quebec’s approach to companion animal welfare. There was an incredible turnout of 350 people and 300 dogs, causing the walk to stretch out for blocks and blocks.
Workgroup Progress On May 8th, HSI Canada also participated in the third of four scheduled workgroup meetings to discuss means to overcome Quebec’s reputation as the puppy mill capital of Canada. The last scheduled meeting, to be held in early June, will focus on overpopulation/abandoned dogs and cats.
Two Conferences for Animals The timing of the fourth meeting is perfect, as it coincides with two important conferences. The first is an international conference on animal law organized by the Université du Quebec à Montréal. It will take place on the weekend of the 21st. The conference will host several experts from across the globe. The second is a conference organized by the Companion Animal Adoption Center’s of Quebec on the 28th of May addressing municipal solutions based on Calgary’s innovative model. HSI/C is proud to support this conference and is inviting all municipalities across the province to attend. HSI Canada is coordinating with several animal welfare groups across Canada as well. Building strong partnerships will further improve Canada’s position and laws. We are grateful for the support of all our caring advocates! |
